The Allure of the Byronic Hero

The Allure of the Byronic Hero

What do Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice, Mr. Rochester from Jane Eyre, and Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights have in common?

They are all Byronic heroes.

A Byronic hero is a man shaped by a tortured past that leaves him wounded, guarded, and convinced he is unworthy of love. He may have a soft heart buried somewhere deep, but he keeps it hidden beneath a stern exterior. Ever since I first watched Crimson Peak, I’ve been drawn to these types of complex men. There’s something haunting about a character who desperately wants love but believes he cannot have it.

And now, I’ve finally written one of my own.

Meet Dorian Graves

Dorian is the leading man in A Realm of Grief and Shadows and A Bargain of Blood and Starlight. He is every inch a Byronic hero. Grief-stricken and hollowed out by a centuries-old curse, he has lost his family, his hope, and the life he once imagined.

When we meet him, he is shattered by the death of his son and, later, his wife. Every choice he makes is shaped by sorrow and guilt. Yet within him is a spark of tenderness, a desire to protect, and a longing for connection he refuses to admit.

And then comes the woman he’s been dreaming of. She may be the key to his redemption.

If you’re like me and love brooding, wounded, impossible men with secrets and shadows, then I suspect Dorian Graves may become your next book boyfriend.
